What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a training method and lifestyle that unites health and fitness into complementary definitions:

“Health is defined as increased work capacity across three domains: time, modal, and age”

“Fitness is work capacity in as many domains as possible”

But what does all that actually mean?

We want you to eat real food, practice and train the major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast.  Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. For us, routine is the enemy.  We like to keep workouts short and intense.

CrossFit is a mixture of barbell strength work, gymnastic/bodyweight movements, and monostructural metabolic conditioning (or cardio for the layman).  Our goal is to increase your body’s GPP or general physical preparedness.  The idea is to train you for the unknown and the unknowable, to prepare you for any physical contingency you might come across.  But we also want to ensure that you are able to maintain this level of fitness for the entirety of your long life.  We can accomplish this goal by teaching you, in our classes, how to have competence in cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.

Can I do it?

Yes of course!  The workouts are universally scalable so that we can accommodate people at different fitness levels in the same class!  Can’t do a pull-up?  We have bands that can assist you.  Not as strong as the ex-pro athlete next to you?  We can scale down the weight or the reps to challenge you but not break you.

Is it safe?

It’s not 100% safe, but nothing great in life is without risk.

How do we minimize risk?

Mechanics: new students have to prove they can do the basics well.

Consistency: after you can do the mechanics, we want to see that you can perform the mechanics repeatedly.

Intensity: After the mechanics can be performed well and repeatedly, we bump up the intensity.  A person’s intensity is not only relative but also each athlete’s time table is different.

FAQS:

I’ve OnRamped at another gym. Do I have to do it again?

Shoot us an email at Hi@BoweryCrossFit.com and let us know your experience with CrossFit, and where you OnRamped. We will take this on a case by case basis.

What if I cannot make any of the OnRamp classes?

If you have a crazy schedule, private OnRamping costs $149 or you and a friend can do it for an extra $99 each.

When does my membership start?

Your membership starts on the first day of class. If you’re traveling and still want to take advantage of the Charter Rate, just shoot us an email and we’ll place your membership on hold until you get back, free of charge.

What classes can I attend with my Mid-day Membership?

Monday - Friday - 9:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm
Saturday - 9:15am, 10:30am
Sunday - 10am-1pm

What if I’m still nervous?

Do you offer punch cards or 2x-3x a week memberships?
No. We want to people to build a close community and a strong training environment. In our experience, the best way to do so is by having a tight-knit group of committed members who show up regularly and push each other often.

Will you have showers?
Soon. We are in the process of securing all the necessary permits from the city to build out our shower. So while there will not be any showers starting out, we will have them 2-3 months down the road.
